EMMA COURTLAND

Emma Courtland has done many things. She’s worked as a writer / editor, film programmer, maker of audio docs, and, during one very uncertain year, as an author of other people’s college admissions essays. But Emma is probably best known as the host / producer of Crime Show from Gimlet Media, a podcast about people and sometimes crime.

Her audio work has been recognized by the Podcast Academy, the Society of History in the Federal Government, and the Writers Guild of America.

Emma is especially interested in cultural form and narrative cognition, and how our modes of sharing stories—written or spoken words, still or moving images—shape our understanding of and interactions with the world.

She has a B.A. in English from UCLA and a M.A. in oral history from Columbia University in the City of New York.
